       Millions of social media users have taken to Twitter, which has not been affected, to discuss the situation, creating a host of memes and puns aimed at the social media sites, and CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

       With Twitter still actively running, some questioned how Twitter's traffic will be affected.

       MKBHD wrote: "I wonder how hard Twitter usage spikes when Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp all go down at once?"

       Another joked that the big three companies would have to switch to Twitter to provide updates.

       Satyachowdary66 said: "Whatsapp, Instagram and Facebook coming to Twitter to announce that their service is down right now" followed by several emojis of tears of laughter.

       Others have taken a more serious approach to the problem, questioning whether the sites have succumbed to malicious foul play in the form of hacking.

       Writing to Mark Zuckerberg, one Twitter user, KemsForU said: "What happens with WhatsUp, Instagram and Facebook? Why are all the apps down...is that your server hacked?"

       In a Tweet by Whatsapp, the communications giant called for patience.

       The statement read: "We’re aware that some people are experiencing issues with WhatsApp at the moment. We’re working to get things back to normal and will send an update here as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience!"

       Facebook echoed a similar sentiment: "We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologise for any inconvenience"
