Latest figures from the National Grid show the UK imports as much energy from abroad via underwater cables as it has in surplus. The amount of UK electricity from overseas has increased rapidly over the last decade from just one percent in 2010 to nearly 12 percent this year.

       Experts are suggesting the rising dependence on foreign electricity could result in Britain becoming vulnerable to “political blackmail.”

       Experts have said France threatening to cut energy supplies to the UK over the fishing dispute is an example.

       Dr John Constable, the energy editor of the Global Warming Policy Forum, told the Telegraph: “Relying on a major expansion of interconnectors from Europe to support UK renewables is at best economically dangerous, as the Irish experience shows, and at worst gives the European Union a powerful weapon.

       “To suggest that home-grown wind power enhances our national security is a naive delusion.”

       Conservative backbench MPs are urging the Prime Minister to prioritise building Britain’s nuclear capacity over less reliable renewable sources including wind to increase domestic power supplies.

       There has been a recent reduction in renewable energy because of a lack of wind this year, forcing Ireland to buy emergency supplies from the UK to avoid blackouts.

       The French have also threatened to cut the power supplies to the entire UK mainland.

       France’s EU affairs minister threatened to cut electricity supplies to Britain and Jersey over disputes surrounding licences to French fishermen in Channel waters.

       In September, the UK government said it had approved only 12 of the 47 applications from the French small boats to work in waters surrounding the UK.

       Senator Ian Gorst, Jersey’s Minister for External Relations, told the i: “I think realistically they wouldn’t be seeking to turn the power off, but there might be a number of other measures around port access and tariffs that they could seek to introduce.

       Mr Johnson also said he wants all Britain's electricity to come from green sources by 2035.

       A government spokesman told the Telegraph: “The UK has one of the most reliable energy systems in the world thanks to a diverse mix of nuclear, gas and renewable technologies.
