       Keir Starmer has insisted Britain’s steel industry will still benefit from the new trade deal with America, despite it being missed out from yesterday’s announcement. Despite concerns from the President, he insisted that British Steel will not be forced to ditch its Chinese owners as talks move forward.

       The Prime Minister celebrated getting Trump to approve an executive order yesterday, which will finally see the trade deal implemented after weeks of uncertainty. While Britain’s car manufacturers and aerospace industry will see an immediate cut to tariffs when exporting to the US, promises about steel taxes were missing from the wording of the President’s order. Speaking from Canada, Sir Keir confessed there is “further work to do in relation to steel, but we’re getting on and doing that work”.

       He claimed the further talks will not “require us to change the ownership of British Steel”, after Mr Trump’s executive order hinted he would like to see a move away from Chinese ownership by Jingye Group.

       The White House is demanding assurances from Downing Street that Jingye won’t use British Steel as a way for China to circumvent US tariffs.

       Sir Keir added: “I'm really pleased that yesterday, the President signed the executive order that means that for cars and for aerospace, within day now the tariffs will obviously be reduced, so that is really good progress.

       Donald Trump initially hiked import taxes on foreign steel to 25%, before increasing them to 50% earlier this month.

       When the deal was first announced five weeks ago, Sir Keir claimed to have scored a huge victory by slashing the tariffs back down to 0%.

       The US and UK are now working at pace to get the promised steel tariffs agreement over the line.
