William and Kate must go on 'charm offensive' in America to shore up support for monarchy

Prince William appears to comfort Kate

Prince William and Princess Wales should lead any royal "charm offensive" in America, a royal author claims.

It's a well-trodden path but few royal engagements have matched the razzmatazz of Princess Margaret's visit to the US in 1965, where she dined with President Lyndon B. Johnson and hobnobbed with Hollywood stars.

"You can't imagine William and Kate having the same impact if they came to America," said Clive Irving, author of The Last Queen and royal columnist at The Daily Beast.

He continued: "You cannot imagine William and Kate in the White House. The whole world has moved on from that."

However, "in terms of future workload, William and Kate should go on a charm offensive for the Royal Family", Mr Irving said.

He explained: "It's clear that William and Kate are very popular here [America] among those who follow the Royal Family."

In the royal author's opinion, William and Kate are very much seen as the "progressive couple" in the US.

In fact, according to Mr Irving, any charm offensive in the US is "much more likely to work with William and Kate than it ever is with the King".

The royal author explained: "I think there's a great deal of feeling that William understands the mood and the reality on the ground far more than Charles ever will."

Mr Irving added: "I think William and Kate do a really good job at trying to balance his [Charles] incapacity to connect because they do have the capacity to connect. And Kate does in particular."

Evidence on the ground suggests Mr Irving is on to something. Kate and William were declared the most popular members of the Royal Family in the US in a recent survey.

Kate secured first place in the Redfield & Wilton survey with a net approval rating of +35, with William following shortly behind with a rating of +22.

Meghan Markle trailed behind with a net rating of +17.

Royal editor Russell Myers suggested Kate and William's strategy since taking over as the Prince and Princess of Wales last year has rewarded them.

He said: "I think that the markers of what makes people a success in America is loyalty to your family and dedication to your love for your country and that’s the embodiment of these two, whilst keeping your counsel and not being rude about people."

Speaking to True Royalty's The Royal Beat, Mr Myers noted the Waleses' approach was starkly different from the strategy Prince Harry and Meghan deployed.

He noted that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had extensive support immediately after announcing their departure from the Royal Family – which they stated was partially influenced by their desire to focus more on their own family.
