Primary schools ban puddings and replace them with fruit

Glasgow City Council will replace puddings in primary schools with fruit and yogurt as it rolls out healthier food for children. The council will also reduce the amount of red meat on menus to three times a week and serve two portions of fresh vegetables with each dinner.

A Halal menu will also be available and there is a bid to swap plastic multi-portion serving trays for more durable melamine plates and bowls, GlasgowLive reports.

The council is also drafting plans to allow food to be pre-ordered, which could reduce waste and provide information on popular meals.

It comes after SNP Councillor, Margaret Morgan, voiced her concerns at a council meeting last Wednesday.

Councillor Elaine Ballantyne echoed: “It is really good to see the nutritional aspect of the school meals being addressed. We know this may be the only nutritious meal some kids may have.”

Stephen Sawers, the council’s head of catering and facilities management, said: “This is not just about complying with legislation it is about service improvement and going on a journey in terms of educating our children in terms of food choices and behaviours.”

He added that staff have been receiving training to improve recipes and quality of food.
