Madeleine McCann investigation update as probe receives £350,000 in extra funding

The Home Office has approved a funding request of £349,328 from the Met Police to cover the 2021-22 financial year. The inquiry into Madeleine’s disappearance, known as Operation Grange, has received £12.5million in public funds since it was launched in 2011.

A Home Office spokesperson said: "The Government has provided up to £350,000 for Operation Grange in 2021-22.

"In line with our Special Grant processes, funding for Operation Grange is approved on an annual basis.

"Ministers have approved a request for £349,328 of funding for this financial year.”

Madeleine was just three years old when she vanished from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on May 3, 2007.

Last year, German police identified 43-year-old prisoner Christian B as a suspect.

But, prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters said the evidence was not strong enough to charge him.

Christian B has always denied any involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance.

Scotland Yard continues to treat Operation Grange as a missing person inquiry.

Madeleine’s parents issued a heartfelt message in May ahead of their daughters 18th birthday on May 12.

In a statement, Kate and Gerry McCann said they still need to know what happened to her, "no matter what".

They said: “Every May is tough - a reminder of years passed, of years together lost, or stolen.

"This year it is particularly poignant as we should be celebrating Madeleine's 18th birthday. Enough said."

Kate and Gerry thanked police officers for their continued efforts and vowed to never lose hope of finding their daughter.

They added: “We hang on to the hope, however small, that we will see Madeleine again.

"As we have said repeatedly, we need to know what has happened to our lovely daughter, no matter what.

“We are very grateful to the police for their continued efforts."
