An apparent suicide attack caused a blast inside a busy Wahailat market on Monday, medical sources reported. A police source said more than 60 people were injured, with some currently in critical condition.

       Some of the market stalls, located in Sadr City, had their roofs torn off by the powerful explosion.

       Two security sources purportedly suggested the bomb was set off by a suicide bomber wearing an explosive belt.

       Children were purportedly among those killed in the attack.

       Iraq’s military confirmed in a statement Wahailat market as the location of the bombing.

       Iraq’s interior ministry said in a statement: “A terror attack using a locally made IED (improvised explosive device).”

       Armed group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) shared a message on its Telegram channel claiming responsibility for the explosion.

       It claimed one of its members detonated his explosive vest in the crowded market.

       Iraqi President Barham Salih condemned the “heinous crime” and sent his sympathies to the families of the victims in a statement posted on Twitter.
