The Queen's grand-daughter, 17, has been studying for her AS-levels at private school in Ascot. It is the first year of an A-level qualification. According to Hello magazine, her chosen subjects are English, history, politics and drama. Like thousands of other students across England, Lady Louise would have received her grades on Tuesday.

Previously the Countess has spoken of ambitions for her daughter, expressing a desire for her to go on and complete a degree at university.

Sophie said: "I wouldn’t force her, but if she wants to. She’s quite clever."

The Countess later told BBC Radio 5 Live that she hoped that her daughter's privacy would be protected in future to allow her to pursue her academic studies.

"I would hope that she can go on with her studies, which I think she probably will want to do, and I hope that she and her friends will protect her from anything that somebody might want to do," she said.

"But I have to let her live her life. It's not mine to live.

"I can only equip her the best that I can, and then she has to make her own choices.

“But I hope for the next few years, at least, she will still be able to be as private as she wants to be."

Lady Louise would be following in the footsteps of her father if she ends up going to university.

Prince Edward gained three A-levels at Gordonstoun - a C in English, D in History and D in Politics.

The Queen's youngest son was awarded a place to study History at Cambridge University, where he graduated with a 2:2.

Lady Louise's grandmother never went to school and was taught at home by a governess, receiving tuition every day from 9.30am until 11am.

Professor Kate Williams, author of Young Elizabeth, said in an interview: "The Queen’s father had disliked school and her mother thought it was more important to have fun."
