A man has been killed on a busy high street following a "disturbance" at a Wetherspoons pub in London.

Police have arrested a 42-year suspect on suspicion of murder following the reported incident at The Watch House pub in Lewisham on Saturday night.

He remains in custody at a south London police station.

Emergency services raced to the scene in south-east London after being called at 8.39pm. They found a 63-year-old man suffering from life-threatening injuries.

He was rushed to hospital but later sadly died. Police believe he had been assaulted following a disturbance at the Wetherspoons pub.

Detective Chief Inspector Craig Magee, from the Metropolitan Police's Specialist Crime Command, said: "This tragic incident happened in a busy part of south-east London.

"We would like to hear from anyone who was in Lewisham High Street or at The Watch House pub and has information about what happened.

"We have spent the night at the scene and there will be an increased police presence in the area today while we continue to gather evidence."

DCI Magee added: "I recognise the concern a crime of this nature causes.

"We have a suspect in custody, and based on the enquiries carried out so far, we do not believe there to be any risk to the wider community."

Police asked anyone with information to come forward by calling 101, quoting CAD 6267/01Mar.
