THE only frozen chicken imported into the country currently is from Thailand, with none from Brazil, says Deputy Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Rosol Wahid.
“(The chickens) are from Thailand and we have not gone as far as Brazil.
“As a start, only two to three containers have been brought in,” he said in reply to a question by Datuk Mahfuz Omar (PH-Pokok Sena) about the status of poultry imports into Malaysia in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.
Rosol said the high price of imported chicken remained a constraint.
He noted that the Agriculture and Food Industries Ministry had so far issued 29 chicken import permits to importers and hypermarkets.
In January, the government had given approvals to 32 companies from Thailand, China and Brazil to export frozen whole chickens to Malaysia to address the chicken shortage.
