KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) respects Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's decision to resign, along with his Cabinet, says Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

The coalition's Parliamentary chief whip said that it also welcomed the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's appointment of Muhyiddin as caretaker Prime Minister until a new premier is appointed.

"We uphold parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy," he said in a statement on Monday (Aug 16).

Fadillah, who was a senior minister and works minister in Muhyiddin's Cabinet, said the Perikatan Nasional government had done its best to handle the Covid-19 pandemic in the country, including accelerating the national immunisation programme.

"However, I am sad to see that despite the Perikatan government's commitment and sincerity in tackling the pandemic and helping the people, the prime minister had to face power struggles which led to his resignation," he said.

On a personal note, Fadillah thanked Muhyiddin for entrusting him to lead the Works Ministry for the past 17 months.

He expressed his hope that whoever is appointed as the works minister after this would continue to implement the infrastructure projects which had been approved, just as the Perikatan government had continued the projects approved by the previous Pakatan Harapan administration.

"The people should not be the victims as a result of the prolonged political crisis and changes of government. Whatever projects have been promised to the people for their wellbeing should be continued," he said.
