KUALA LUMPUR: It is for the constituents to decide if he should relinquish his seat as the Pasir Salak MP, says Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman.

       "Now that I am an ambassador, whether I should give up my seat is for my constituents to decide," he said.

       He added that it was also for his party to decide if he could stand as a candidate in the next general election.

       Speaking to media at the sidelines of the Human Resources Ministry’s Hari Raya celebration here on Tuesday (May 31), Tajuddin said that he was confident he could be both an MP and Ambassador to Indonesia.

       Tajuddin said he was slated to receive his credentials from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah on June 20th.

       He added that he could only leave for Jakarta to begin his duties as an ambassador once he received his credentials from the King.

       The question came after Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah asked Tajuddin whether he would give up his role as an MP to take up the ambassador's post.

       On calls for general elections by certain factions within Umno, he said while people have views but it was the decision of the party that they would have to abide by.

       "The party's decision is one thing, the government's is another," said Tajuddin.

       He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has two roles to play; as the head of the government as Prime Minister and as an Umno vice president.

       He added that the power to dissolve Parliament lies with Cabinet and not the party.

       "The party can ask, urge or request. But the Constitution is everything," he added.
