The teenage midfielder broke his silence yesterday to condemn the hate aimed at him and his teammates. And he accused Instagram, Twitter and Facebook of failing to curb the poison poured out over their platforms.

Saka, 19, told the tech giants: “I knew instantly the kind of hate that I was about to receive. That is a sad reality that your powerful platforms are not doing enough to stop these messages.”

But the Arsenal midfielder vowed to the “majority of people” who rallied round to condemn the bigotry: “We will win.”

Saka told fans: “There are no words to tell you how disappointed I was with the result and my penalty...I’m sorry we couldn’t bring it home for you this year, but I promise we will give everything we’ve got to make sure this generation knows how it feels to win.”

England’s social media account responded: “You should be incredibly proud of the role you played in our incredible journey this summer, Bukayo.”

It added: “Keep your head held high.”
