The planes could be heard for miles around, sparking concern. Taking to Twitter, one Londoner joked he "thought we were being attacked".

Tower Hamlets Police reassured Londoners the fighter jets were part of a planned event.

They said on Twitter: “If you hear a loud rumbling in the sky shortly….. It’s a USAF F15 jet transiting over London.”

The Normal Trade wrote in response: "There will be four fighter jets flying over the Spurs Stadium today around 2.30pm to mark the start of the NFL game between Atlanta Falcons & New York Jets.

"Residents should not be alarmed and it will be part of the pre-match celebrations."

The US flyover is part of Sunday’s NFL match in Tottenham Stadium, between the Atlanta Falcons and the New York Jets.

Four US Air Force F-15 Eagle Strike Fighter Jets took off from RAF Lakenheath and fly over the stadium on the last note of the United States national anthem.

Flyovers like this are done "to showcase the capabilities of the aircraft while also inspiring patriotism and future generations of aviation enthusiasts".

The flyovers will be done by the 492nd Fighter Squadron, which is a part of the 48th Fighter Wing at RAF Lakenheath.

On social media, resident shared how “bloody noisy” the jets were.

One said: “Thought we were being attacked lol.”

Another added: “They were so low and bloody noisy!

“They flew in front of me on the way there but behind me on the way back - I got ears but not eyes on their return!”
