NUTP to teachers: Use TikTok for lessons, not to gain fame

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) has advised teachers to use the TikTok application for teaching purposes, instead of popularising themselves.

NUTP president Aminuddin Awang said the union supported the use of social media, especially TikTok, for learning purposes, but the application should not be used during face-to-face learning in classrooms.

He said in the classroom, teachers should give their full attention to students who are right in front of them.

"Making live recording for social media, including TikTok, in classrooms during official working hours is wrong, (especially) if it is to popularise oneself.

"This is unhealthy and against the rules, and should be stopped.

"School administrators and District Education Offices need to act firmly to maintain the image of the teaching profession," he said when contacted on Thursday (April 14).

Aminuddin said many teachers in service today grew up with social media, but should be aware that they had to abide by Education Ministry guidelines on its use.

He suggested that teachers use social media to upload educated-related content their students could use after school hours.

On Wednesday (April 13), a teacher's TikTok live session during class went viral on Twitter, prompting many negative reactions especially from parents. – Bernama
