While the quest for autonomy has been a constant source of tension for Pakistan authorities, the main grievances of the protesters included high inflation, the lack of wheat subsidies, inadequate supply of flour and other basic commodities and the rights over natural resources and the illegal usurpation of land by the Pakistani army.
Transparency over electricity prices and the transfer of ownership of hydroelectric power stations to the Pakistan administered Kashmir government were also on the demand list.
The situation has been further aggravated by reports that authorities were diverting electricity supplies away from Kashmir and on to larger cities within Pakistan

When authorities ignored the deadline, JAAC leaders appealed to the people to boycott electricity bills and refrain from depositing them.

“We peacefully are demanding our basic rights, like subsidies on flour and wheat. However, the protests suppressed by the Pakistani defence personnel resulted in shelling and baton charges. This led to several protestors getting severely injured and harassment of the local people,” said one local leader.
