Gifu Gov. Hajime Furuta (Mainichi)

       GIFU -- Two residents of this central Japan prefecture came in close contact with individuals infected with the coronavirus's omicron variant, Gifu Gov. Hajime Furuta announced on the night of Dec. 1.

       One of the residents was confirmed to have had close contact with the first case of omicron in Japan, and is being isolated at an accommodation facility near Narita International Airport in Chiba Prefecture. The other resident came in close contact with Japan's second case of omicron and, after returning home, has been staying at a treatment facility in Gifu Prefecture.

       Both residents tested negative for the coronavirus upon arrival in Japan.
