RESIDENTS in Teluk Intan, Perak, are fed up with the lack of care and maintenance at the Hindu cemetery in the town, Malaysia Nanban reported.

Activist and PSM Teluk Intan coordinator Murali Bala said they lodged a complaint with the Teluk Intan Hindu Sabha two weeks ago.

Although some clean-up work were apparently carried out by the Sabha, which maintained the facility, the cemetery was quickly again back to its uncared-for state, he said.

The cemetery grounds are overgrown with bushes and rubbish strewn about, and visitors also complained of sightings of snakes and monitor lizards, he said.

Burial at the cemetery was not free as the operator apparently charged RM350 for a homeless person to be buried there recently, Murali claimed.

       > The daily also reported that a woman in Tamil Nadu, India, sold her five-day-old baby boy for five thousand rupees due to poverty.

The woman’s relatives became suspicious when they saw her back home without her newborn child and made a police report.

Under questioning, the woman, identified as Chandra admitted to giving the baby boy to a woman who works with her.

Police found the woman and retrieved the boy from her.

Chandra said she and her husband, both cleaners, could not afford to care for the baby.
