KOTA KINABALU: Sabah recorded 5,007 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday (Feb 20) with the most number of infections due to community spread, says state Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Masidi Manjun (pic).

He said that 63.13% or 3,161 of the new cases were due to sporadic infections while there were 41 active clusters including a new educational cluster called the Jalan Beluran Lama cluster that was detected on Sunday.

He said 21 out of 27 districts in Sabah recorded symptomatic cases (sporadic infections) as the highest infection category.

Though there was a decrease of 352 cases compared to Saturday, Masidi said that the cases were still "very high".

He added that the spread in sporadic cases might see Sabah’s figures continuing on an upward trend.

Kota Kinabalu city continued to record four-digit cases with 1,265 new cases.

       A total of 12 districts recorded three-digit cases - Penampang with 719 cases, Tuaran (466), Papar (398), Tawau (355), Sandakan (250), Kota Belud (214), Beaufort (185), Putatan (167), Keningau (161), Kota Marudu (129), Ranau (121) and Lahad Datu (113).

Fourteen other districts recorded double-digit cases, Masidi said.

In Beluran, a new educational institution cluster - the Jalan Beluran Lama cluster - was detected involving 35 students of SMK Beluran hostel.

A total of 4,986 people or 99.58% of 5,007 patients on Sunday were under Categories 1 and 2; five people in Category 3; 13 people in Category 4 and three people in Category 5.

Of the 5007 new infections, 606 cases involved children under the age of 11.
