KUALA LUMPUR: Eight residential units at the Sri Johor Flats at Cheras were destroyed in a fire on Sunday (Dec 19) night.

       City Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Nordin Pauzi said, in a statement Sunday, that they received a distress call about the fire at 9.17pm.

       "We dispatched 35 personnel as well as fire engines from Bandar Tun Razak, Pudu, Hang Tuah, Sri Hartamas, Keramat and Cheras, including three water tankers, and other assets.

       "Eight units on the fourth floor of the flat were engulfed in flames when we arrived at the scene," he said.

       He added that the all the affected units were completely destroyed in the fire.

       "We used aerial ladder platforms and turntable ladders in our operations to put out the fire.

       "No casualties were reported and overhaul works were being carried out at the site," he said, adding that the cause of the fire was under investigation.

       Meanwhile, checks by Bernama found that the fire was brought under control at about 11.30pm.

       The incident had also caught the attention of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, as well as Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, who visited the scene to meet the fire victims.

       A 43-secone video has been gone viral on social media, believed to be of the fire.

       The video showed several units at the flat engulfed in flames.

       A voice believed to be of the person taking the video claims that Block 31 of the flats was on fire.

       The woman also said Fire and Rescue Department personnel had just arrived at the scene.
