JOHOR BARU: A Malayan tapir has escaped the Johor Zoo and was seen wandering around Jalan Gertak Merah here.

Johor Baru Civil Defence Force officer Captain (PA) Mazran Mohamed said in a statement that the animal jumped outside its enclosure after losing its calf.

“The female tapir was seen by the Civil Defence Force team who were conducting a patrol under ‘Ops Prihatin’ at 3.15am on Saturday (April 6).

“Officers and personnel from the agency and Perhilitan managed to bring the tapir back to the zoo at 4am,” he said.

He added that the animal was unharmed.

The Johor Zoo is currently undergoing an upgrade and is expected to reopen at the end of this month.

Earlier, a 22-sec video was uploaded to the Angkatan Pertahanan Awam Malaysia Negeri Johor Facebook page showing Civil Defence Force personnel chasing a tapir on the road.
