GEORGE TOWN: Kedah's decision not to grant or renew the local business operating licences of gaming outlets goes against the principles of multiculturalism and pluralism of Malaysia, says MCA vice-president Datuk Tan Teik Cheng.
"No one should impose their own values and religious agenda on others, but must respect and tolerate each other instead," he said.
He said that as a country of diverse races, religions and cultures, the government has for decades shown respect for the way of life and rights of all ethnic and religious groups.
"We do not encourage people to gamble, but the federal or state governments should not interfere with the freedom and basic rights of the people. Religious agendas of individual political parties and politicians cannot be imposed on the populace," Tan said.
Last week, Kedah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor announced that the state's local councils will stop issuing business operating licences to gaming outlets, while those whose licences are valid can continue operating until their licences expire.
