PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's score and ranking on the global Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2023 have improved compared to the past three years, according to Transparency International Malaysia.

       "This is good news as it shows that we have rebounded from the downward trend.

       "It is an improvement of three points compared to the nation's CPI score in 2022, which was 47 points.

       "This gives us hope that we are back to the passing score of 50 points," Transparency International Malaysia president Dr Muhammad Mohan said when announcing the CPI 2023 results during a press conference on Tuesday (Jan 30).

       He said that Malaysia's ranking on the CPI had also shown improvement from 61 in 2022 to 57 in 2023.

       He said that this showed that there was an improvement in the public perception of the effort against corruption.

       Since 2019, Malaysia's scores on the CPI have been on a downward trend after a high score of 53 that year.

       The nation scored 51 in the CPI in 2020, 48 in 2021 and 47 in 2022.

       The CPI is measured over a two-year period, and based on data gathered from 180 countries capturing perceptions of corruption in the private sector.

       This CPI 2023, themed Corruption and Justice, covers surveys done between 2022 and 2023.

       The CPI covers not only corruption but also government commitment, prosecution of corrupt officials, excessive red tape and protection of whistleblowers.
