Majorca’s tourism crisis is continuing as the Balearic Islands President issues a stark warning.

At a gathering for the social and political pact for the sustainability of the Balearic Islands on Wednesday, President Margalida Prohens Rigo said that overcrowding is damaging tourism competitiveness.

She stated that the pact initiative aims to reformulate the tourism model for all of the Balearic islands in the face of "social unrest".

"The time has come to make difficult decisions and transform the economic model," said the president. “We are not an exception, just look at Madrid, London, Rome. Tourists are and always will be welcome, but we mustn't fool ourselves."

Up until now, the tourism model has been based on "volume and quantity" and is "incapable" of growing in "value or quality," he said.

The change will be designed to improve the quality of life for the citizens of the Balearics.

"Tourism has negative externalities that must be managed and minimised," she said. The president insisted that tourism "cannot continue to grow in volume".

Growth will be through greater value, she has made clear in parliament, not through a "decrease" in tourism as such.

Prohens said that the tourism model cannot be rethought every four years when there are elections: "We must sit down, listen to each other and reach consensus on the guidelines for our economic model."

To kick off the plan, the government will be conducting a huge survey of residents to get their opinions.

This comes as Spain is hit with swathes of anti-tourism protests, with locals complaining of seasonal jobs causing poverty and housing prices going up due to property being bought as second and holiday homes.
