'Blame Joe Biden!' Radio caller erupts at claim Boris Johnson may lose out on knighthood

The caller rang into Matthew Wright's LBC show to slam the decision to award former Prime Minister Tony Blair a knighthood in light of the Iraq war. The host and caller clashed over the legacy of Mr Blair and over whether Boris Johnson will be honoured once he leaves Downing Street or be condemned for his handling of the withdrawal of British troops from Afghanistan.

Mr Wright told the LBC caller: "In a few years time, we'll be talking about a rise Sir Boris Johnson and Afghanistan happened on his watch.

"Now, we're barely at the surface of what's going on in Afghanistan, but that is going to collapse into if it's not already deemed a failed state.

"It's going to become one and that's happening on a Boris Johnson's watch.

"His foreign secretary was on a holiday in Sardinia, Sicily or something at the time.

"So he's still going to get a gong will you be as angry about that?"

The caller fired back "Boris didn't take us into Afghanistan."

Mr Wright replied: "But he presided over a disastrous collapse. We ran away, we've left thousands of people that helped us who are now in grave danger. We've abandoned them all. We've got 12,000 Afghans in temporary accommodation still waiting for housing.

"I mean, you said it's been a disaster in Afghanistan and Boris Johnson will down the line be made Sir Boris Johnson."

"Blame Joe Biden," the caller responded.

"He is the man who is responsible for the debacle in Afghanistan."

"Yes, but we were tied to it and you can make exactly the same case for Iraq, that Tony Blair aligned us with George W. Bush," argued the host.

The caller replied: "What are you suggesting? That we should have stayed, our troops should have stayed on their own."

Buckingham Palace has announced Mr Blair will be appointed a Knight Companion of the Noblest Order of the Garter, the oldest and most senior British Order of Chivalry.

The former Labour prime minister was in office between 1997 and 2007.

He said: "It is an immense honour... I am deeply grateful to Her Majesty the Queen.

"It was a great privilege to serve as prime minister."
