WALLY the walrus shows off his knotty side after jumping onto a speedboat for a nap.

       The arctic mammal, on a seaborne tour of Wales, Cornwall and the French and Spanish coast, has now popped up in County Waterford, Ireland.

       The flippered fish eater got aboard the motor boat and lay down for a snooze in the sunshine.

       Adam Collins from Clonakilty Distillery said: “It was definitely a surprise to see the walrus in the boat, let alone off the coast of Clonakilty.

       “We’re well used to seeing minke and humpback whales around here, but never a walrus.

       “Thankfully there was no damage caused. We reckon he travelled all this way just to try a minke gin and tonic.”

       Walrus usually live in the seas around the Arctic circle and feed on clams, crabs and shrimp.

       And now a rescue organisation is appealing for help in finding it a safe floating platform.

       Seal Rescue Ireland, which works to rescue seals, wrote on Twitter yesterday (tues): “WalrusWatch and EMERGENCY Appeal: We are looking for a pontoon/floating platform as a safe haul-out site for the walrus, so that he can be effectively monitored, protected from disturbance, and damage to property prevented.”
