TOKYO -- Strong Typhoon Malou is expected to make its closest approach to Japan's Ogasawara Islands about 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo on the night of Oct. 28, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said.

The agency is calling for residents of the islands to be on their guard against storms and high waves, as well as heavy rains that could cause landslides, flooding of low-lying areas, and swelling and overflowing of rivers.

The JMA says the 20th typhoon of the season is expected to bring winds of up to 40 meters per second (144 km/h) with a maximum gust speed of 55 m/s (198 km/h) to the islands on Oct. 28, and winds of up to 35 m/s (126 km/h) with a maximum gust speed of 50 m/s (180 km/h) the following day.

The Ogasawara Islands are estimated to be hit by 10-meter high waves on Oct. 28, and the following day will see waves of 8 meters high. In the 24-hour period to 6 a.m. on Oct. 29, the islands could see up to 180 millimeters of rain.

According to the JMA, Typhoon Malou was located about 400 km south-southwest of the island of Chichijima, part of the Ogasawara Islands, and moving northeast at a speed of 20 km/h as of 10 a.m. on Oct. 28. It had a central atmospheric pressure of 965 hectopascals, with a maximum wind speed near its center of 35 m/s (126 km/h), and maximum wind gust speeds of 50 m/s (180 km/h). The area 165 kilometers northwest and 110 kilometers southeast of the typhoon's center is in a storm zone with wind speeds of 25 m/s (90 km/h) or more.
