TOKYO -- Residents of the Ogasawara Islands about 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo are being warned by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) to be on high alert for landslides through noon on Oct. 29 due to heavy rain brought by strong Typhoon Malou.
The agency is also calling for the islands' residents to watch out for rough seas with swells through the early evening of Oct. 29. The Izu Islands have also been warned of rough seas with swells through that evening.
The JMA says Typhoon Malou is expected to bring winds of up to 20 meters per second (72 kilometers per hour) with a maximum gust speed of 30 m/s (108 kph) to the Ogasawara Islands on Oct. 29.
On Oct. 29, waves up to 8 meters high are expected around the Ogasawara Islands, while the Izu Islands could see waves up to 6 meters high, the agency said.
According to the JMA, Typhoon Malou was located in the waters near the Ogasawara Islands and is moving north-northeast at 40 kilometers per hour as of 9 a.m. on Oct. 29. It had a central atmospheric pressure of 965 hectopascals, with a maximum wind speed near its center of 40 m/s (144 kph), and maximum wind gust speeds of 55 m/s (198 kph). The 110-kilometer radius from the typhoon's center is a storm zone with wind speeds of 25 m/s (90 kph) or more.
The typhoon will continue to move northeast and is expected to turn into an extratropical cyclone on the morning of Oct. 30, when it will be far to the east of Japan.
