A Calumet City man was ordered held without bail Monday after being charged with murder in the shooting death of his 30-year-old girlfriend over the weekend, authorities said.

       Karim Hunter, 27, was arrested around 6 a.m. Monday in the 100 block of Jennifer Lane in Calumet City, the same block where he lives, and charged with the murder of a Chatham woman who was found unresponsive in the 700 block of East 79th Street about 5 a.m. Saturday, according to police.

       At a bond hearing Monday streamed on YouTube, Cook County Judge John F. Lyke Jr. ordered Hunter held without bail.

       The woman was identified as Jeaneen Walters, 30, of the same block where she was killed, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Following an autopsy Sunday, the medical examiner’s office determined she died from a gunshot wound to the head.

       At the bond hearing Monday, a prosecutor said Walters died from a close-range gunshot wound to the back of the head, “execution style.”

       Walters and Hunter were in a relationship and Walters told family she was unhappy and wanted to end the relationship, the prosecutor said.

       Surveillance video captured Hunter entering and leaving Walters’ apartment around 4 a.m. Saturday morning before he notified police of her death, the prosecutor said. Hunter also called Walters’ cousin and said he found Walters dead inside the apartment from an apparent suicide, according to the prosecutor.

       Hunter told police the gun accidentally went off and that he threw it into a nearby river, according to the prosecutors.

       Hunter faces up to a life sentence. His next court date is July 19.
