The USB Restricted Mode is a security features inroduced in iOS 11.4.1 nearly seven years ago. It is meant to make apple devices inaccessible to third-party software after the sceen has been locked for one hour.

This means that law enforcement, hackers, or any one else who plans to copy the contents of your phone to a computer, flash driver or similar device are not able to.

It was launched following mobile device forensics company, Grayshit developped GrayKey - a technology designed to unlock any iPhone by connecting the mobile device to the box via a USB cable.

After that between two hours and three days, the phone will display a black screen showing the device's passcode and other information, according to Malwarebytes.

GrayKey has previously recieved criticism from privacy advocates and cyper security experts, who have warned that the technology could end up in the hands of thieves if it ends up on the black market.

The company is run by US intelligence agency contractors and an ex-Apple security engineer.
