PETALING JAYA: The legal team for Sam Ke Ting (pic), who was sentenced to six years' jail and a RM6,000 fine for reckless driving, will be led by former Federal Court judge Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram.

       Sam's legal team will include Sri Ram, Harvinderjit Singh as well as Muhammad Faizal Mokhtar, who has been representing her since the start of her case.

       According to Harvinderjit, they are providing their services pro bono (without charge) to appeal Sam's sentence.

       "Sri Ram has agreed to conduct the appeal for her," said Harvinderjit.

       Harvinderjit said Sam finalised the appointments on Thursday (May 5) afternoon at Sri Ram's office.

       Meanwhile, Harvinderjit said they would inform their appointment as Sam's legal counsel to the Court of Appeal deputy registrar Mohd Khairi Haron during case management on May 11.

       He also said the team will ask for appeal records in preparations for the case, adding that a petition of appeal will be filed after that.

       "If need be, we will also add questions of law to be argued during the appeal," said Harvinderjit.

       On April 13, Justice Abu Bakar Katar sentenced 27-year-old Sam to six years' jail, a RM6,000 fine and a three-year driving ban after her prison sentence was over, for reckless driving that resulted in the deaths in Jalan Lingkaran Dalam here at 3.20am on Feb 18, 2017.

       She had previously been acquitted by the Magistrate's Court.

       The High Court had ruled that the lower court had erred in accepting her defence statement without her being under oath.

       The case management for Sam's appeal will be held on May 11 via the Zoom platform.
