SHAH ALAM: Swollen drains outside Valencia Apartments along Jalan Tokoh 25/8 in Section 25, Taman Sri Muda, that could not hold surface runoff following an afternoon downpour that were further worsened by household garbage dumped into the water channels caused water to overflow onto the road.

       Kota Kemuning assemblyman V. Ganabatirau, who rushed to the area on being told that flash floods had occurred outside Valencia Apartments, found that it was water pooling on the roads instead.

       "It is not flash floods as described but water pooling. I walked the length of Jalan Tokoh 25/8 and I found that garbage in the drains had blocked the drainage outlets, resulting in a backflow," he said.

       He added that after the major floods in December, the drains were cleaned.

       "The Shah Alam City Council had done the cleaning but people still resort to dumping garbage into the drains.

       "People, must not dump things into the drains. It would block the flow of water or worse still, a flash flood could take place.

       "So, please stop this irresponsible habit of dumping into drains," said Ganabatirau.

       Earlier, it was reported that water on the stretch of the road was at ankle level but under control.

       On social media, a 22-second video, which was posted at 4.11pm Monday, showed water pooling outside Valencia Apartments and the alleys at the terrace houses of Jalan Tokoh.

       Previously, more than 2,000 homes in Taman Sri Muda were submerged by the floods for a period of five days following heavy rains on Dec 18 last year.

       This saw more than 6,000 residents being evacuated to temporary relief centres (PPS).
