Hammond Police are questioning a person of interest in a shooting that left a 13-year-old boy dead and another 13-year-old boy wounded in the city’s Hessville section Sunday night.
The shooting started around 7:30 p.m. in the 3600 block of 167th Street near Phrommer Park after trick-or-treating hours, Hammond Police spokesman Lt. Steve Kellogg said Monday. The second boy wounded in the shooting was taken to a hospital for treatment and released.
Police are still investigating and no other details could be immediately released, Kellogg said.
“Hammond Police Department is saddened to announce the shooting of two 13-year-old boys in our city last evening,” Kellogg said in a release. “While we are thankful for the community support, which led to the arrest of the person of interest, we are heartbroken that such an event could even occur.
“Our hearts go out to the families of these boys.”
Anyone with any additional information or who saw anything that may be helpful is asked to please call Hammond Police Detective Sgt. Chris Gootee at 219-942-4900 or Detective Sgt. Shawn Ford at 219-852-2998.
