KUALA LUMPUR: Some 2,692 individuals were detained for driving while intoxicated throughout 2021, says Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Nadzri Hussain.
The Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) deputy director said the individuals were apprehended in 1,249 operations codenamed "Ops Mabuk" nationwide.
"We have always been consistent in curbing driving while under the influence of alcohol.
"The blood alcohol levels of those detained were above the permitted limit," he told reporters during a special operation early Saturday (Jan 1) morning.
The JSPT also issued 24,293 summonses for various traffic offences in 3,017 "Ops Samseng Jalanan" conducted between Jan and Dec last year, he added.
"We also detained 2,491 individuals for several traffic offences, including driving and riding without a licence.
"A total of 3,294 vehicles were also seized last year," he said.
DCP Nadzri said almost 50,000 summonses were issued last year for running the red light.
"Some 48,798 summonses were issued for this offence.
"Majority of the offences were committed by motorcyclists (24,636) followed by car drivers (19,180)," he said.
For going against the flow of traffic, DCP Nadzri said 385 summonses were issued to motorists who went against the flow of traffic.
"It involves several vehicles including 158 motorcycles, 171 cars, 23 lorries and 28 four-wheel drives," he said.
On the New Year's Eve's operation, DCP Mohd Nadzri said some 2,462 personnel were involved from various agencies including the police, the Road Transport Department and the National Anti-Drug Agency.
"The objective of the operation was to reduce the number of fatal accidents, ensuring motorists abided by traffic laws and ensuring smooth traffic.
"We are always consistent in focusing on enforcing traffic laws and regulations," he said.
He advised the road users to be mindful of the safety of everyone while abiding by existing laws.
