Tokyo reports 871 coronavirus infections on Jan. 10

       TOKYO -- The Japanese capital recorded 871 COVID-19 cases on Jan. 10, after seeing 1,223 new infections the day before, the metropolitan government announced.

       Reported case numbers typically drop on Mondays, after low testing figures over the weekend, especially on Sundays.

       During the first week of January, Tokyo registered an average of 338.5 infections per day, a jump from the daily average of 29.8 cases in December 2021. The capital saw a total of 562 COVID-19 infections in November for an average of 18.7 cases per day, 2,176 total cases in October (an average of 70.2 cases per day), and 31,929 total cases in September (an average of 1,064.3 per day).

       By Jan. 9, 3,175 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo since the pandemic began in Japan in the spring of 2020. No COVID-19 deaths have been reported in Tokyo since Dec. 22, 2021.

       Tokyo has recorded 388,766 infections to date, the most among Japan's 47 prefectures. As of Jan. 9, there were 724 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Tokyo, four with severe symptoms.
