ALOR SETAR: A flash flood washed away three people as heavy rains caused massive volume of water gushed down a stream Gunung Jerai and the surrounding area of Yan district on Wednedsay (Aug 18). The two were later safe and unhurt but one is still missing.
They all were employees of Jerai Hill Resort, three of which were in their 30s, whereas the missing man was in his 40s.
Two hill and water recreation parks - Titi Hayun and Seri Perigi were also flooded by the rain which fell continuously that started at 4.30pm.
The rains caused Sungai Kunyit, Sungai Teroi and Sungai Puteri Mandi to over flow flooding the areas of Perigi, Teroi Bukit, Singkir, Kampung Permatang Keramat, Kampung Lubuk Boi, Pekan Yan Besar, Titi Teras, Kg. Acheh and Kampung Setoi.
Fourteen Covid-19 positive patients, 45 on home quarantine orders and another 60 people had to be evacuated.
The Covid-19 positive villagers were placed at Sekolah Kebangsaan Teroi. Others were relocated to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Yan.
In Kuala Muda District, a Covid-19 positive family were effected by the flash flood. However they were allowed to stay put at their house which was not badly affected.
Meanwhile, the Kedah Forestry Department confirmed that no logging activities was carried out upriver in response to an allegation that illegal logging caused the flash flood.
Kedah Mentri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor rushed to the flood scene and was briefed on the situation of the flash flood at the Operation Room of Yan District Office late Wednesday evening.
