Search on for teen feared drowned in waters off Sandakan

       KOTA KINABALU: A search and rescue (SAR) operation has been mounted at a coastal area in Sandakan district after a 16-year-old went missing in the waters and feared drowned on Friday (Dec 29).

       As of 8.30pm, victim Mohd Amiruddin Juhardin has yet to be found and the search will be continued on Saturday (Dec 30), according to the Fire and Rescue Department.

       The department initially received the report at 5.40pm about the incident that occurred at a beach around Kilang Sinora, Batu Sapi there.

       “According to the emergency call, the victim Mohd Amiruddin was at the beach for a swim with friends.

       “Upon reaching the location, the team gathered more details and conducted the SAR along the beach waters there.

       “Information will be updated from time to time,” said the department spokesman.

       Meanwhile in a separate case in Kundasang, the department’s Mountain Search and Rescue (Mosar) unit assisted a 28-year-old woman climber who sprained her leg when climbing Mount Kinabalu there.

       The team received the alert at 10am about the incident at Sayat-Sayat checkpoint after the victim suffered from swelling on her right ankle due to the sprain and was unable to walk.

       “Assisted by two mountain guides and two Sabah Parks officers, the Mosar team carried the victim down using both piggyback method and a stretcher.

       “Upon reaching the Timpohon Gate (mountain entrance), the victim was handed over to the head of her climbing group for further action. The operation ended at 3.38pm,” added the spokesman.
