Lisa Nandy squirms over Starmer’s history after backing job review 'What's the difference'

Lisa Nandy appeared on Good Morning Britain and argued there should be a "tightening up" of rules surrounding paid consultancies following the reports Geoffrey Cox secured several lucrative side jobs and Owen Paterson lobbied on behalf of businesses. Ms Nandy feared MPs who had second jobs could see those interests "spill" into their political lives and said it would not be right to allow certain companies access to the Government. But Ms Nandy began to stutter after she was confronted with Sir Keir Starmer's own side work which netted him thousands of pounds and said sometimes second jobs "enriched" the lives of MPs.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Ms Nandy discussed MPs' second jobs and demanded a "tightening up" of rules.

Ms Nandy admitted rules were already in place to prevent lobbying and conflict from interests from happening but said the Owen Paterson case showed there were still holes in the legislation.

The Labour frontbencher stated more "transparency" was needed and attacked Prime Minister Boris Johnson for trying to get Mr Paterson "off the hook" with his case.

But hosts Susanna Reid and guest presenter Ed Balls confronted Ms Nandy with Sir Keir Starmer's own record which showed he provided independent legal advice before he became Labour leader.

Ms Reid wanted to know what was the "difference" between Sir Keir providing legal advice and other MPs doing consultancy work.

Mr Balls appeared to defend Ms Nandy and pointed out she was against consultancies rather than second jobs.

Ms Nandy tried to backtrack on her condemnation and said: "Because at the end of the day we've got two MPs at the moment who are practising doctors, there may be more.

"They do hospital shifts, some members of the public might think that is not appropriate and you should be working full time as a member of parliament.

"But others might think that enriches your experience that you can then bring to the House of Commons."

Ms Nandy said it was "right" to deal with those cases with transparency.

The Shadow Foreign Secretary added the difference between Sir Keir and Geoffrey Cox was the latter spoke out against tax havens despite being paid by a company in the Cayman Islands.

She said Sir Keir had always been upfront with his work and feared MPs could "drag politics through the sewer" if they were not clear with the work they have done.
