George Galloway once slammed his new star candidate as so untrustworthy as to be unfit to represent voters, it can be revealed.

Speaking outside Parliament this afternoon, Mr Galloway boasted that his party has now quadrupled since his shock victory in the Rochdale by-election, and promised he would “change this election”.

Announcing 150 new Workers Party candidates, Mr Galloway promised: “We will have the same impact on Labour as Mr Farage and the Reform Party are likely to have on the Conservatives."

He added: “In potentially hundreds of seats we will materially affect the result.”

One of his two new star signings, along with former England cricket star Monty Panesar, was ex-MEP Amjad Bashir.

Mr Bashir represented both UKIP and the Conservatives in the European Parliament from 2014 to 2019.

In 2015 he defected to David Cameron’s Conservatives, sparking a furious slap down from Nigel Farage who accused him of lying about employing illegal immigrants in his business.

Questions were also raised about the Tories’ open embrace of Mr Bashir despite George Galloway claiming he had stood as a council candidate for his former party, Respect, in 2012.

During the row Mr Galloway accused his new star candidate of failing to have “any real political principles or commitment, only naked opportunism and self-interest”.

Mr Galloway also went one step further, signing a Parliamentary Early Day Motion accusing Mr Bashir of being untrustworthy and unfit to represent voters in Yorkshire.

Mr Galloway, the sole signatory of the EDM, wrote: “Amjad Bashir, until last week a UKIP member of the European Parliament who has now been warmly welcomed into the Conservative Party by its leader David Cameron, is unfit to represent the people of Yorkshire and the Humber because his word cannot be trusted”.

He called on the Government and the Conservative Party to “declare to the voters of Yorkshire and the Humber that Amjad Bashir's relentless party switching and misrepresentation of his past makes him unfit to represent them, whichever party's colours he is temporarily wearing”.

Today Mr Bashir told the press that he wants to “represent this country, we are proud British citizens”.

“What a great leader like George, who’s been so brave, for the last 50 years has fought on the right side, when others in this country have represented themselves and only themselves.”

In Tweets dating over the last few months, Mr Bashir described Mr Galloway’s victory in Rochdale as sending “a strong message of rejection to Starmer and his Zionist sympatizers [sic]”, as well as implying David Lammy would be tried by the International Criminal Court for being “complicit in the worst of war crimes including ethnic cleansing”.

In a statement this evening, Mr Galloway told the Express: “There’s been a lot of water under the bridge since [I made those remarks]”.

“Mr Bashir is part of our big tent, and this just shows how big that tent is.”
