BJP announces candidate list for Sikkim assembly polls 2024. Check full list here

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on 26 March announced the second list of 9 candidates for the Sikkim Assembly Elections 2024. In addition to this, the party has also announced list of candidates for the by-elections in Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal and Karnataka.

Sikkim Assembly polls list

The party has fielded Bhim Kumar Sharma from Gyalshing-Barnyak assembly constituency and Aruna Manger from Namchi-Singhithang constituency. The Assembly Elections will be held in Sikkim with voting during the first phase on April 19, the counting of votes will be held on 2 June. Assembly elections in Sikkim are held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls, and the BJP recently broke its alliance with the state's ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha.

Tumin-Lingee assembly constituency - Phurba Rinzing Sherpa

West-Pendam assembly constituency- Bhupal Baraily

Shyari assembly constituency- Pempo Tshering Lepcha

Martam-Rumtek assembly constituency- Chewang Dadul Bhutia

Upper Tadong assembly constituency- Niren Bhandari

Gangtok assembly constituency- Pema Wangyal Rinizing

Earlier on Sunday, the BJP had announced list of 14 candidates for the polls to the 32-member Sikkim assembly. In the first list, party fielded state unit president DR Thapa for Upper Virtual, while senior leader NK Subba will contest from Maneybung Dentam.

The BJP and Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) had contested 2019 assembly polls separately with the SKM going on to win 17 seats to form the government, while the BJP drew a blank polling less than two per cent votes. The two parties then later formed a post-poll alliance after the BJP's tally of MLAs swelled to 10 with as many defectors from the SDF joining it while two others switched allegiance to the SKM taking its tally to 19.

While launching a vitriolic attack on the SKM, BJP Sikkim Spokesperson Passang Sherpa said that the ruling party was running a "corrupt" government and "indulging in political violence and selling natural resources and assets of the state like hydel power projects at throw-away prices". "We are glad that the uncomfortable alliance with the SKM is over for good and we feel free now having broken the shackles of keeping company with the SKM", Sherpa told reporters as reported by PTI.

Meanwhile, the counting of votes for the Arunachal and Sikkim was changed from June 4 to June 2. The decision came after the term of the two Assemblies is till June 2. This means that the elections need to be wrapped up on or before the date, said the Election Commission had said in a press release.
