Camilla was driven by the Jordan royal to a joint engagement at a children's centre, as the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall began their royal tour of Jordan and Egypt. This came after the Duchess of Cornwall attended a formal welcome with King Abdullah II and Queen Rania at the Al Husseiniya Palace. Speaking at the reception, Prince Charles said to King Abdullah: "How hugely we all admire Jordan and your Majesty's efforts on looking after so many refugees coming from all around the area.

"Jordan is so unbelievably hospitable – it's marvellous."

The future King of England also apologised for the delay to the trip, which occurred as a result of the pandemic.

He said: "It is always very special indeed to come back to Jordan – I'm sorry this time it is 19 months late.

"The fact that we can come back is hugely encouraging.

"This occasion is even more special bearing in mind the centenary.

"The friendship between our countries. That relationship has mattered even more and matters a great deal within the UK."

In response, the King said: "We are tremendously delighted to welcome you back."

The royal trip to Jordan was initially planned for March 2020 but had to be pushed back as a result of travel restrictions.

From their reception at the palace, Queen Rainia drove the two royal ladies to their next engagement.

At the children's centre, the pair took part in a range of activities with local children, including a "life skills" workshop with teenage girls, teaching them about building self-esteem and assertiveness.

The event took place at the Queen Rainia Family and Children Centre (QRFCC), which was established in 2005 to offer child protection activities to families of Jordanian, Palestinian and Syrian origins.

The centre aims to provide services that combat child abuse and support families from across the nation.

As part of their trip, the couple will be visiting both Jordan and Egypt, using the tour to highlight the important bonds between the UK and both countries.

The tour, which comes just days after the conclusion of the COP26 conference in Glasgow, will also have a strong focus on addressing the climate crisis.

The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall's trip makes them the first members of the Royal Family to carry out a major overseas tour since the pandemic started.

In Jordan, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall will mark the country's centenary and 100 years of the UK-Jordan bilateral relationship.

Charles and Camilla left the UK for Jordan on Sunday - which is also Charles' 73rd birthday.

This comes as senior members of the royal family have faced increasing calls to step up and support the Queen as she is increasingly having to cancel engagements due to poor health.

Most recently, she was forced to pull out of the Remembrance Sunday Service at the Cenotaph after spraining her back.

This came after she cancelled her attendance at both COP26 and a trip to Northern Ireland.

The Palace has said the Queen is continuing to conduct "light duties" at Windsor Castle.
