BUKIT MERTAJAM: A 27-year-old kindergarten teacher and her husband were among six people arrested by police in a swoop that saw heroin and syabu worth RM87,000 seized.
Penang Narcotics Crime Investigations Department chief Asst Comm Mustafa Kamal Gani Abdullah said the suspects, aged between 27 and 40, had been operating in Juru, Prai, Seberang Jaya and Butterworth since early this year.
“They got their supplies in Penang and Kedah. They bought the heroin for RM2,700 per pound (453.6g) and resold it at RM3,400 for a profit of RM700,” he said during a press conference at the central Seberang Prai district police headquarters yesterday.
ACP Mustafa Kamal said all the suspects, including two women, were picked up in four locations between July 22 and July 24.
Police also seized four vehicles and cash worth a total of RM162,250.
Police first moved in on two men, aged 34 and 40, and found 4.5kg of heroin in their car in Juru at 5pm on July 22.
“Their arrest led us to a car wash centre nearby, where we picked up a 30-year-old man with 228g of syabu in his bag.
“The man then led us to his rented apartment in Simpang Ampat where we discovered 758g of syabu. His wife, who is a private kindergarten teacher, was also arrested.
“On Saturday, we picked up another couple, both aged 37, at an apartment in Butterworth.
“We found 91g of heroin there, along with equipment and chemicals believed used to process heroin,” he said.
ACP Mustafa Kamal said all the male suspects, who tested positive for drugs, had multiple criminal and drug-related records.
One of them – a 37-year-old construction contractor assistant – had 13 drug-related records.
