PETALING JAYA: With a name like Queen Sayang, this 22-year-old student has had more than her fair share of funny encounters due to her unusual moniker, such as a male lecturer refusing to call her name for fear of making his wife mad.
Nurqueen Sayang Dinnie Wirakarnain said because of her unique name, which means Queen Love, she has had to resort to showing her MyKad or even SPM certificate to people who do not believe it is her real name.
“Among those who refused to say my name was this male lecturer of mine. He said that if he calls me Queen, my friends will be jealous. If he calls me Sayang, his wife will get angry. Several times, he made my classmate who sits next to me in class call my name on his behalf.
“My friends and relatives all call me Sayang because all my siblings are also named Queen,” the computer science degree student at UiTM Jasin told mStar.
Her five siblings are Nurqueen Shazza Dinie, 25, Nurqueen Sarra Dinie, 24, Nurqueen Nabisya Dinnie, 20, Nurqueen Via’ Ariqa Dinnie, 17, and Nurqueen U’myra Dinnie, 15.
“My friends call me Queen. If there are those who call me Sayang, I’m okay with that too,” said the third child in her family.
The mother, Haznaidah Mat Zain, said the name Queen was given to her daughters because her eldest was born at Queen Medical Centre in Nottingham, United Kingdom, when her late husband was pursuing his PhD studies there.
Haznaidah, 48, said she and her husband took some time to decide on Queen Sayang’s name as they could not agree on a name that they both liked.
“At one point, Nurqueen’s grandmother said: ‘If it’s so hard, why don’t you just name her Sayang? Let everyone love her’.” said the single mother who resides in Bukit Katil, Melaka.
She also shared about getting in trouble with another man’s wife due to her daughter’s name.
Haznaidah said she was at a bus station in Melaka and had called Queen Sayang to pick her up.
“However, I called the wrong number. I thought it was my daughter, so I said: ‘Sayang, I’m almost here. Come pick me up.’ It turned out I was speaking to someone’s wife,” she said.
The other woman was hopping mad as she thought Haznaidah had called to speak to her husband. She also threatened to file a police report.
“I even sent her a copy of my daughter’s IC as proof,” she said.
Haznaidah, who runs a cafe, said the name Queen Sayang really suits her daughter, who is sensitive and “manja”.
“Sometimes she is even more manja than her younger siblings. We have to give her extra love,” she said.
