KUALA LUMPUR: Charitable and welfare homes are pleading with the public and companies to not cut back on their contributions in cash and kind, while expressing their appreciation for their donors’ generosity.

They said every ringgit counts as it goes a long way in helping them with maintenance and caring for their residents.

Johor Baru-based Hand In Hand Association said most people are still generous and willing to help the underprivileged although the pandemic has affected their income.

“Since the pandemic started last year, our organisation has been giving out free meals, basic food items and providing assistance such as medical equipment, milk powder and diapers to hospitals, the sickly, and poor families.

“We take comfort in the fact that so many people are still eager to help. We welcome them as every sen counts when we are helping the less privileged,” its founder Wen Poh Choo said when contacted.

Wen also thanked all donors for their generosity, which helped her organisation to reach out to more people in need.

In IPOH, Anning Old Folks’ Home chairman Marcus How Kok Peng thanked regular supporters and the public who continued to help them.

“The people realise that many homes needed funds and donations during the pandemic.

“We have received groceries, money and also cooked food, so we are really grateful,” he said, adding that they are a non-profit organisation.

“As we also run an orphanage, so we would certainly welcome more food and groceries.

“We would be grateful to receive other items such as crutches and wheelchairs too,” he said.

In MELAKA, director of Angel Welfare Home PS Angel said the home still needed public help to manage the increasing number of residents.

“We are looking after orphans and the disabled, and need financial assistance to pay for food and to procure medical products.

“Currently, we still receive some donations but not like in the pre-pandemic period.

“Even a small amount is meaningful to us,” she said.

In PETALING JAYA, Vanke Malaysia managing director Lang Cong said the company would continue to support worthy causes through its corporate social responsibility initiatives.

Recently, it launched “Senyum Malaysia” in which a sum of RM10 is donated on behalf of 1,000 participants of the campaign to spread positivity.

A mock cheque for RM10,000 was presented to Mercy Malaysia vice-president II Datin Raja Riza Shazmin Raja Badrul Shah to assist the non-profit organisation in providing medical relief, sustainable health-related development and risk-reduction activities for vulnerable communities.
