East Surrey Hospital has cancelled all outpatient appointments and some planned surgeries to cope with the rising number of patients. Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (SASH), which runs the Redhill hospital, has urged people to “think before going to A&E”.

       Michael Wilson, CEO of the NHS Trust, said the situation was due to “extremely high demand”.

       The issues are not thought to be related to an increase in coronavirus infections or the fuel crisis.

       The Trust has released a traffic light system to advice patients on where they should go.

       It says only those with “serious or life-threatening emergencies” should contact the hospital.

       Under the traffic light system, green is for those who need help to “prevent getting ill and self-manage illnesses”, they are advised to phone 111 or contact a GP.

       The amber section provides a number of Minor Injury Units and Urgent Treatment Centres for patients to contact.

       It says those facilities can “treat most injuries or illnesses that are urgent but non life-threatening”, such as broken bones, minor head injuries and infections.

       Those unsure are urged to call the NHS on 111.

       In a statement, the NHS Trust said: “SASH is really busy at the moment

       "We’re urging you to think before going to A&E. Minor injuries units can treat most urgent but not life-threatening injuries.

       "If you’re unsure where to go please call 111 who can point you in the right direction. Help us care for those who need it."

       The CEO of the NHS Trust expects the affected services to resume by Friday.

       Mr Wilson said: "Due to extremely high demand on our services we have postponed outpatient appointments and some elective surgery while our doctors and nurses pull out all the stops to provide safe care for our patients.

       "We expect these services to resume in the next 24 to 48 hours."

       Councillor Mark Brunt, Leader of Reigate & Banstead Borough Council, added: “Our thoughts are with the hard-working staff at East Surrey Hospital who continue to deliver life-saving treatment round-the-clock in extremely challenging circumstances.

       “We urge residents to follow the advice from Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (SASH) about where to get medical help they may need and only attend East Surrey Hospital in the cases of an emergency.

       “We will continue to monitor the situation and will stand by ready to support East Surrey Hospital where required.”
