DAR ES SALAAM, March 4 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) has allocated 150,000 euros (about 162,919 U.S. dollars) in humanitarian aid to Tanzania in response to the recent cholera epidemic in the country, said an EU statement reaching Xinhua Monday.

The statement said the support aims to assist the country in containing the outbreak, which poses a significant risk to over 4 million people. It also stressed that the EU funding will bolster the efforts of the Tanzanian Red Cross Society in providing much-needed relief, including clean water, healthcare, sanitation and hygiene.

The funding will run for three months, until the end of May 2024, and is expected to reach 178,000 people in the hardest-hit areas of the Kagera, Mwanza and Shinyanga regions.

Tanzania is currently facing its most severe cholera outbreak in almost 40 years, with 13 regions affected since early January 2024, according to official reports.

The widespread epidemic is worsened by heavy rainfall from the El Nino weather phenomenon, which overwhelms wastewater systems and other infrastructure, especially in densely populated regions.
