A BRAIN cancer patient says he has been "abandoned" by the council after being forced to live in a home infested with mould.

Ivor Adamson, 62, has been embroiled in a bitter 12 month battle with council chiefs over the fungus that is "making him ill".

He complained that his council house in Tai Capel, Wrexham had become overrun by black spores that spread "right across the house and attacked all of my furniture" in June last year.

But 12 months on, the 62-year-old is still living in the same "terrible" conditions, leaving him "stuck" in his bedroom and kitchen.

"They haven’t done anything, they haven’t helped me," Ivor told Leader Live.

"Since last June I’ve had one inspection in November. I was told by the council to use bleach on the mould, but the inspection officer told me not to touch it, it’s like a plant and it will grow back."

He said he was now stuck in the bedroom and kitchen of the home after contacting the council and not hearing back.

       HEALTH WOES

He added: "I had brain surgery three years ago and I have two tumours left, I don’t know when I will get that surgery.

"It’s not just the mould affecting my health, it’s the stress. I’ve been on multiple courses of antibiotics because the mould is making me sick. I don’t know what I can do. I’ve asked to move, but nothing."

The cancer patient said he was now stuck in a "waiting battle" - frustrated to see other homes in the area being refurbished.

He previously begged council bosses "to get me out of here or fix it" as he fears the damage the fungus is doing to his ailing health.

       COUNCIL SAY COVID STOPPED INSPECTION

According to a Wrexham Council spokesman, an inspection was due back in June - but was suspended due to Covid restrictions.

They told the publication Ivor had been advised "how best to deal with the mould" until they were able to examine his home.

Julie Francis, Head of Housing, said: "We have made numerous visits to this address to determine what we can do to assist despite the COVID restrictions placed upon us by Welsh Government.

"Our surveyors have attended with a colleague from the local estate office and as the matter is related to condensation we have issued Mr Adamson with advice on ways to reduce the moisture content in the air including adequate ventilation of the property.

"We have also attended to treat the mould spores which have developed from the moisture in the air and have received another report from Mr Adamson that the mould has returned.

"We have now made a pre-arranged appointment for another surveyor to visit the property and survey the issues reported.

"They will in turn, produce a report which will include recommendations to resolve the issue to include adequate ventilation in the property.

"This will be shared with Mr Adamson with an agreed plan and we will continue to work with Mr Adamson on what action will be needed to improve the situation."
