Evanston police continue to investigate Monday after a man was fatally shot and another was stabbed Sunday afternoon in what police believe are related crimes.

Evanston police responded to the 2000 block of Wesley Avenue around 3:30 p.m. Sunday after a 911 call was made reporting that a person was shot and another person stabbed, police said. When officers arrived, they located both men.

The man who was shot and later died was identified as Naperville resident Van T. Ross, 45, of the 200 block of East Bailey Road, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The 27-year-old Chicago man who was stabbed was taken to a local hospital. Police did not release his specific condition, but said that he was stable.

“It’s not a random act,” police Commander Ryan Glew said Monday. He added there are no suspects in custody as of Monday afternoon.

Glew said the investigation indicates the shooting and stabbing are related, and that police are checking the area for security video that may have captured the crime.

“Canvassing for video is something we do as part of an investigation,” he said. “I don’t know what we recovered.”

The Sunday killing is the second fatal shooting in Evanston this month.

On Sept. 7, Alejandro Lopez, 19, of the 500 block of Belvidere Road, Waukegan, was ordered held without bond after he was charged with first-degree murder, home invasion, discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in the Sept. 4 shooting death of Stanley Butler III in an apartment in the 1700 block of Dodge Avenue.

Glew said the weekend shooting and stabbing and the Sept. 4 shooting do not appear to be related.

“The whole thing is still very early,” he said. “It’s still wide-open.”

Glew said that at least 15 investigators with the Evanston Police Department and officers with the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force are investigating the most recent crime.

Police are asking anyone with information to call 847-866-5040 or text tips to CRIMES (274637) and to then start their message with EPDTIP.
