The UK Foreign Office has issued new advice for Brits travelling to a popular South American country, warning that terrorism "cannot be ruled out".

There are fears of a terror attack in Chile due to mounting tensions between state actors and the country's indigenous community in the south - the Mapuche.

There have already been attacks in the Araucanía, Biobío, and Los Ríos by people claiming to represent the interest of indigenous people and targeting state actors and businesses.

Anarchist groups have also carried out attacks mainly focusing on property damage in the capital Santiago and its Metropolitan area.

Visitors are being told to keep their belongings with them at all times and report any suspicious behaviour to local authorities.

The warning reads: "Terrorist attacks in Chile cannot be ruled out. Some individuals or groups claiming to represent the interests of indigenous communities have carried out attacks in the Araucanía, Biobío and Los Ríos regions of the country.

"State actors and businesses operating in these regions are the primary targets of these groups. You should exercise caution and follow the instructions of local authorities.

"Anarchist groups have also carried out attacks, mostly in the Santiago Metropolitan region. Attacks are principally aimed at causing property damage. Keep bags with you at all times, as unattended bags might be treated with suspicion by local authorities.

"Report any suspicious behaviour or unattended packages to local authorities."

The Foreign Office also warns of the threat posed by people who see "the UK and British nationals as targets".

It says: "There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times."

UK Counter Terrorism Policing also offers advice on what to do before heading off on holiday to ensure you're best prepared in the very unlikely event of a terrorist attack.

They say: "Check the latest UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office Travel Advice for the country you are visiting. Make sure you have adequate travel insurance – check the small print. Watch our holiday safety film."
