       Shocked MPs have said they are “deeply alarmed” by a penguin enclosure at an aquarium without natural light or fresh air. A cross-party group of 16 parliamentarians have penned a letter to London Aquarium about its gentoo habitat – saying: “We are deeply alarmed by the ongoing situation regarding the treatment of penguins at Sea Life London Aquarium (SLLA).

       “We are particularly concerned by reports highlighting the conditions in which these intelligent and social animals are being held. The few dozen square feet enclosure that the penguins have access to is nothing in comparison to the open ocean, where wild gentoos can dive hundreds of feet and swim up to 22mph.

       “We believe that urgent action is needed to address their welfare. The gentoo penguins at the aquarium, part of a captive breeding initiative, are confined to a small, artificial environment that cannot replicate the complexities of their habitat in the wild.

       “We echo the concerns raised by animal welfare groups about the basement enclosure with no natural light or fresh air.”

       Eleven Liberal Democrats, Labour MP Rachael Maskell and all four Green Party MPs signed the letter to the aquarium this week.

       The Daily Express has joined Freedom for Animals and the Born Free Foundation to demand that the penguins be moved to a more suitable environment.

       A petition has already attracted more than 4,700 signatures.

       The MPs called it “essential” to work towards a future where wildlife is protected in their natural environments and that the suffering of sentient beings is minimised.

       They added: “We are asking for Merlin Entertainments, the owners of Sea Life London Aquarium, to immediately stop the exhibition of penguins and use its considerable resources to guarantee a safe and suitable relocation for these animals.”

       It comes as Cabinet members of Sir David Amess’s Children's Parliament backed the appeal to move the penguins.

       Child prime minister Naila Seetal, 11, said: “Upon learning that the Sea Life London Aquarium keeps 15 gentoo penguins in a basement enclosure without fresh air or natural light, I was both shocked and saddened.

       “These incredible animals deserve an environment that closely mimics their natural habitat, ensuring their wellbeing and quality of life.

       “I strongly believe that the current environment for the penguins is inadequate. Ensuring the welfare of all animals should be a top priority, and relocating the species to a larger, more suitable habitat would allow them to thrive while ensuring their safety and wellbeing.”

       Child Business and Trade Secretary Amalie Jan, Child Chancellor Aryan Shekar, Child Housing Secretary Beatrice Burzotta, Child Environment Secretary Lucy Clayton, Child Foreign Secretary Nia Datta, Child Home Secretary Omar Kane, Health Secretary Theo Hoad and Child Education Secretary Harry Papworth all back the crusade.

       A Sea Life spokesman said: “The welfare of all the animals in our care is of paramount importance to us at Sea life and we are committed to delivering the highest levels of care through our team of dedicated welfare experts, both internal and external.
